Steve Reynolds claimed his first victory in the Unlimited category by outlasting his competition on Mission Bay during the 1979 Jack-in-the-Box Regatta. Mechanical failures ended the Final Heat early for race favorites Atlas Van Lines and Miss Budweiser. Chip Hanauer’s lead in the Squire Shop slipped away with his own mechanical difficulties, but he was able to nurse the boat across the line to finish second. Ron Armstrong would round out the podium finishers in Bob Patterson’s U-80 Miss Van’s P-X.
